Dissection

To expose the lateral side of the knee, the lower part of the iliotibial band was separated from the surrounding tissues and reflected laterally. Biceps femoris was isolated and traced to its attachment on the head of the fibula. A transverse incision was made across the lower bellies of the Gastrocnemius. The lateral and medial heads were then separated, with the lateral head being removed from its attachment to the capsule. The medial and lateral limbs of the arcuate ligament were identified as a thin membranous structure arising from the posterior aspect of the head of the fibula, crossing over the musculotendinous junction of the popliteus, and blending with the posterior capsule.
