Gluteus minimus
The gluteus minimus was situated more anteriorly in relation to the femoral head, which explains its primary role as an internal rotator. Its anteromedial insertion accounts for the muscle’s secondary role in flexion and abduction. This coincides with the manner in which the muscle is tested, in flexion, abduction and internal rotation (Sahrmann 2002). It is assessed in combination with the tensor fascia lata and the anterior fibers of gluteus medius, which appears appropriate given the strong fascial attachments to both of these muscles that was revealed in the dissection.
