About the School

Curtin Staff and Students

Curtin University of Technology, named after John Curtin, Prime Minister of Australia from 1941 to 1945, assumed university status in 1987 having served Western Australia well for many years as the Western Australian Institute of Technology (WAIT).

The University is based in Perth, the capital city of Western Australia - geographically the largest state in Australia, with a population of 1.9 million people. Acclaimed as the sunniest and friendliest city in the country, Perth is beautiful, modern, cosmopolitan, culturally diverse, clean and well planned, with the lowest cost of living of all Australian capital cities.

Dynamic and responsive, the University offers challenging and contemporary courses which meet the needs of those groups to which it is accountable - professional bodies, employers, government and the community. It also demonstrates a caring attitude towards its students.

Curtin University offers over 850 courses at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level to more than 31,000 students, in the areas of business, engineering, health sciences, humanities, science, mining and agriculture. The Division of Health Sciences is one of the biggest centres of multidisciplinary health training and research in Australia offering nearly 100 learning programs, two thirds of which are for postgraduate study.

The School of Physiotherapy is one of the oldest learning centres in the Division of Health Sciences. Established in 1953, it was amalgamated with WAIT in 1967.. Over the years, the science and practice of physiotherapy has developed to the extent that in 1993, the School graduated its first doctoral student. In July 2002, the School of Physiotherapy relocated from the Shenton Park campus to our new, custom-made building located on the main Bentley campus.
