Master of Sports Physiotherapy

Overview

The course provides individuals working in sports physiotherapy with an opportunity to receive advanced tuition from renowned teaching staff in sports-specific assessment, treatment and rehabilitation. It is designed to enhance knowledge, skill and competence in clinical practice, research and issues related to sports medicine.

Entrance Requirements

Eligibility for temporary registration with the Physiotherapists Registration Board of WA is a prerequisite for entry into the course.

Course Structure

Students admitted into this course will receive 100 credit points of recognition of prior learning (RPL). The course duration will therefore be two semesters.

This course focuses on dynamic contemporary sports physiotherapy in clinical practice. This clinical program is strongly underpinned by clinical reasoning framework with a thorough subjective inquiry, a detailed physical examination, treatment and rehabilitation strategies for all levels of athletes. Both spinal and peripheral are equally emphasised. Clinical placements occur in both semesters and students are supervised by expert clinicians. The units include: Musculoskeletal Practice; Sports Clinical Practice; Sports Rehabilitation, Clinical Anatomy, Pathology and Diagnosis, Exercise Physiology and Evidence Based Practice. Units are raught by experienced academic staff who are respected internationally.

The course also includes the development of a research question, completing the research process and preparing a manuscript ready to submit to a peer-reviewed journal. All research projects have clinical relevance and are supervised by physiotherapy experts. Research Physiotherapy Project units are studied in both semesters.

International Applicants

Course Requirements

Recent evidence of proficiency in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and a Senior First Aid certificate or its equivalent is a prerequisite for Sports Clinical Practice 750 and Sports Clinic 752 . Essential learning strategies demand that all students disrobe appropriately to act as subjects for their peer group.

Professional Recognition

Graduates who are registered with the Physiotherapists Registration Board of Western Australia can apply to have this qualification listed.

International applicants please note: The Master of Sports Physiotherapy degree does not entitle overseas trained physiotherapists to practice in Australia.

Many graduates work with elite sporting teams and travel the world to prestigious events such as world championships and the Olympic Games.
