Student volunteers at Relay for Life - Ryan Shephard and Soraya Mackay-Koelen

The forecast wet weather did not deter the 64 students and 18 staff from the School of Physiotherapy who provided 24 hours of continuous massage services at the 2012 Perth Relay for Life. Our team provided more than 1000 massages to the tired calves and feet of Relay participants who donated $2 to the Cancer Council of WA for this privilege. For many first year students it was their first opportunity to employ their newly acquired massage skills on "fee for service" clients.

It was also a first for new Head of School Professor Keith Hill who volunteered for the 1:00 am shift and was surprised by the  level of activity in the tent at that hour of the morning.  "The shift for me was a lot of fun, great to interact with and help the large number and variety of people walking for a great cause, and also wonderful to see and work with a group of enthusiastic  students providing a high quality and much appreciated service". Professor Hill went on to add that this event "reflected a strong community spirit by the School, and provided an excellent showcase of the School, its staff and students".
